Welcome to the website of Mark Ashton Photography. You’ll find here a growing selection of the architectural, landscape, travel, and fine art images I’ve taken in many years of shooting. I hope you’ll enjoy them.
I’m based in Ithaca, New York, where I located to acquire a PhD in the history of architecture. Serious photography began for me when I wanted to capture the interactions of light and shade, space, structure, and color in the European buildings and paintings I was studying. In time, I was drawn to focusing on similar effects in other aspects of our human and natural environments.
Through the years, I have photographed on assignment, at events, for stock, commercial and domestic decoration, and academic image collections. My work has been published in national and regional magazines and in books. One of the galleries here reflects the interest in pre-modern European architecture that led me into photography – illustrations for the book J. B. Fischer von Erlach: Architecture as Theater in the Baroque Era by Esther Gordon Dotson. The gallery AshtonWorks Residential Design shows residences, renovations and remodelings that I have designed in upstate New York while also pursuing photography.
